Virginia and Taiwan

  • Building on Strong Trade Ties

In 2016, Virginia’s exports to Taiwan reached $524.18 million. Taiwan is Virginia’s 2nd largest export market in Asia. Virginia companies have substantial opportunities to expand their business and cooperation with Taiwan.

  • Growing a Key Market for Innovation

Just like Taiwan, Virginia has become a global R&D hub. As the birthplace of the Internet and one of the leading centers of software development, Virginia‘s hitech economy continues to expand. Northern Virginia itself is the 2nd largest R&D center for high-tech products in America. Enhancing trade ties with Taiwan will help Virginia increase its hi-tech exports to Taiwan and promote bilateral cooperation in the innovation industry. In fact, Taiwan’s hi-tech sectors effectively integrate R&D operations and supply chains stretching from Fairfax, through Hsinchu Science Park, and now into Mainland China.

  • Bringing New Trade and Investment Home
The IT and chemicals manufacturing industries as well as many other sectors important to the Virginia economy are poised to benefit from partnership with Taiwan. Virginia has also attracted investment from several Taiwanese companies, but there is significant potential for Taiwanese enterprises to boost investment and create jobs in Virginia and vice versa.

  • Opening Up A Region of Opportunity

Taiwan serves as an ideal partner for U.S. business in Asia. Taiwan has complete industrial supply chains, high concentration of industrial clusters, and a consolidated manufacturer base. The World Economic Forum ranked Taiwan's industrial cluster infrastructure first in the world in its "World Competitiveness Report 2014" for the ninth consecutive year. This is reflected in Taiwan's comprehensive protection of intellectual property rights, sound legal system, and modern infrastructure.

Furthermore, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) signed between Taiwan and Mainland China in 2010 has opened up opportunities in Mainland China. Businesses can now collaborate with innovative Taiwanese companies and leverage ECFA to utilize Taiwan as a gateway to Mainland China and other fast-growing Asian markets.
