Maryland and Taiwan

  • Building on Strong Trade Ties

In 2016, Maryland’s exports to Taiwan reached $114.86 million. Taiwan is Maryland’s 6th largest export market in Asia.

  • Growing a Key Market for Innovation

Like Taiwan, Maryland is rapidly developing into a global biotechnology hub. Enhancing trade ties with Taiwan will help Maryland increase its biotech and other hi-tech exports to Taiwan and promote bilateral cooperation in the innovation industry. In fact, Taiwan’s hi-tech sectors effectively integrate R&D operations and supply chains stretching from the Rockville, through Hsinchu Science Park, and now into Mainland China.

  • Bringing New Trade and Investment Home

The machinery manufacturing industries as well as many other sectors important to the Maryland economy are poised to benefit from partnership with Taiwan. There is significant potential for Taiwanese enterprises to boost investment and create jobs in Maryland and vice versa.

  • Taiwanese Businesses Investing Jobs in Maryland

Taiwanese companies have invested in Maryland as it develops into a global biotechnology hub. Examples of leading Taiwan businesses in the state include:

    • Amcom Communications
    • Inc Neurologic, Inc.
    • Imoai Corporation Nanoamp Solutions Inc.
  • Opening Up A Region of Opportunity

Taiwan serves as an ideal partner for U.S. business in Asia. Taiwan has complete industrial supply chains, high concentration of industrial clusters, and a consolidated manufacturer base. The World Economic Forum ranked Taiwan's industrial cluster infrastructure first in the world in its "World Competitiveness Report 2014" for the ninth consecutive year. This is reflected in Taiwan's comprehensive protection of intellectual property rights, sound legal system, and modern infrastructure.

Furthermore, the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) signed between Taiwan and Mainland China in 2010 has opened up opportunities in Mainland China. Businesses can now collaborate with innovative Taiwanese companies and leverage ECFA to utilize Taiwan as a gateway to Mainland China and other fast-growing Asian markets.
